1 · The site — set the pressure

Honest rail. At a ~30 m plot, real soil/climate data (SSURGO, PRISM) are near-uniform — so any within-plot variation here is designer-painted and stochastic, not resolved from data. And the trait table below holds illustrative prototype values, not the final cited (Díaz 2022 / USDA PLANTS / i-Tree) numbers.

You've set the conditions. Now commit what you think the site will assemble by year . You lose these bets out loud, then the model shows you the gap. Bets lock — that's the point.

Your charter so far

Why the lock? A self-organising simulation is the most seductive kind of black box — watch it long enough and the software's computation feels like your own understanding. So the film stays paused until your prediction is committed. The gap between your bet and the ensemble is the entire lesson.

Wilding is a teaching prototype. Its engine performs ecological selection of a fixed species pool — trees don't evolve on a 40–120-year clock, so nothing here mutates or inherits; “survival of the fittest” means differential survival only. It is an upstream stress-test that feeds a Grasshopper / CAD planting workflow — not a replacement for it, and not a stamped plan set. Trait values are illustrative. The engine is written as pure modules (succession-core/*, wilding/*) that lift directly into the All Means Works platform. ·
