Nine versions, one engine. ARCH 273 uses V7: if an assignment link sent you, you are already on it. They read the same model with the same readout keys — what changes is how you search and how finely each force is broken open, whether the landform shades the sun keys (V2, V5, V6, V7, V9 and V10 do), whether TIME runs (V9 weathers V7’s bench over a hundred years), and how the solver searches (V4 walks one design, V10 breeds a population). Open the menu below for which version has which feature.

Which version does what — all nine, and what each one alone can do
  • V1 · Bench

Any massing, judged live by the site forces.

The general-purpose bench: author or import a massing, drag the dials, read every metric in the readout, set goals and let the NSGA-II optimizer push the form toward them.

  • V2 · Grounds

The same engine, standing on one real measured site.

Site-first: the five Superfund sites with their briefs and primary records, the landform in the SCORE, a year of weather (ERA5, a weather model fitted to observations, or a station .epw you drop) driving comfort and the wind rose — and V4's live Tune walker on the bench.

Only here: A live Tune walker on the bench

  • V3 · Live

A whole field of variants at once, narrowed round by round.

The only version that scores many designs simultaneously and lets you cull them down to one, with the variables pushed past the sliders that declared them.

Only here: Score a whole field of variants at once

  • V4 · Solver

V7's whole bench with a live solver walking every variable while the forces cycle.

Since 2026-10-05 V4 is V7's bench — every layer, reading, sheet and export, the same component with the same props — DRIVEN by a live walker that moves every variable of the design at once (each slider with a range, bar the on/off switches, plus the building's turn) toward what the forces ask, scored on the same grounded engine the readout reads. Two dials set the speed for every variable at once — the change per step (how far) and steps per second (how often); the force weights cycle slowly from force to force (or approach to approach), and touching any force slider takes them over until the Cycle switch hands them back. It lands with every layer on, on Tar Creek. The Council it used to be — named approaches side by side, cross-scored, with maximin, least-regret and the A-vs-B ledger — is one link away, unchanged.

Only here: Named approaches that argue (cross-score matrix) · A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set · A-vs-B ledger as Markdown

  • V5 · Freehand

One walker, every parameter of the search yours — read with V7's readings, on real ground.

The only version where you author the SEARCH itself — per-gene bounds, pinned genes, weighted and direction-flipped forces, and new forces built from any metric in the catalog. Since 2026-09-21 the walked design is read by the same chain V7 runs (verdicts, the nine force sheets, the readout), stands on the studio grounds or a Surveyor survey, the walker climbs the grounded score the readout prints, and a scrubber rewinds through every design the walk stood on.

Only here: Author the search itself — genes, bounds, forces

  • V6 · Site forces

Every site force broken open, on real ground, across the whole year.

The full-service bench: sun per opening, air as a mechanism, mass by material, view from every standing point — plus the whole year from a weather file (monthly gain, the sun calendar, the climate strip), the ground read as a force (slope, cut and fill, where the water runs), V1's energy lens, the readout, goals with Improve, and studies plotted on a 36″ sheet.

Only here: Plot the saved studies on a 36″ sheet

  • V7 · Four rectangles — you are here

The game with its fourth rectangle — the focus — and the readings taken from it.

V6's whole bench, opened on the 4 Rectangles jig: Rect D is a table or a seating pit cut into the plinth, chained to a point in the room, and here (and in V4, which drives this same bench) the sun on the focus, the mass it adds or takes, and the view FROM THE SEAT are read out and drawn beside the four rectangles in plan. One switch is V7's too (and V4's, on the same bench): Air → The drawn air follows can move the air drawn in the model to the Date + time bar's day and hour — the weather year's outside air and wind, the room at ASHRAE 55's comfort temperature — so January draws a strong stack and a hot afternoon runs it backwards. It opens on the dials, and the scores keep the dials either way. And two layers are V7's (and V4's): WATER (where a storm's rain runs off the roof and stands on the ground) and DAYLIGHT (the daylight factor on the floor under an overcast sky).

  • V9 · Century

V7's bench weathered over a hundred years — decay, mould, rust, frost, soil loss, year by year.

The only version that runs TIME: V7's whole bench with one more layer, CENTURY, that takes the weather year hour by hour at every face of the model — driving rain through the overhangs, wet hours, freeze–thaw at the surface, sun dose — and runs the published mechanisms year by year for the materials you pick (paint and stain life, the VTT mould index, Scheffer's decay hazard, Tuutti's carbonation, ISO 9224's corrosion, Lipfert's stone recession, frost spalling, biological growth, a roofing's service life) and RUSLE soil loss on the ground with the eaves' drip line. A year scrubber paints the skin and the ground at any year to 120 and lowers the landform by what it lost; a ledger says what fails where and when, under a maintenance regime, an atmosphere class and a climate held or warmed along the Hundred-Year View's pathway. Every number is a screening estimate on a simple model and says so.

Only here: The CENTURY layer — the skin and the ground weathered year by year, with the ledger of what fails when · Materials for the walls, the roof, the plinth and the trim — each weathered by its own published rates · The climate warmed along the Hundred-Year View's pathway, year by year · Soil loss on the ground (RUSLE) and the landform lowered by it — the eaves' drip line included

  • V10 · Genetic

V7's whole bench with a genetic algorithm breeding every variable, every knob of the search yours.

The only version with a real GENETIC ALGORITHM: a population of designs over every variable the program has (each slider with a range bar the on/off switches, plus the building's turn), scored on the same grounded engine V4's walker climbs, then selected by tournament, crossed (blend, uniform or SBX) and mutated, the elite carried over and immigrants drawn fresh — population, every rate and size, the seed, the speed (or flat out), stop-after and step-one-design / step-one-generation all on the page. The bench shows the run live, slid from design to design — the best of each generation, the best so far, or every design as it is scored — while the search runs in its own worker at its own speed. Every generation is kept (scrub to any one's best), the last generation is listed, the force weights re-score the whole run without rebuilding anything, and ★ Pick keeps any design in a GALLERY of small hidden-line pictures, to show again or breed a new population from. It lands with every layer on, on Tar Creek.

Only here: A GENETIC ALGORITHM on the full bench — a population bred and selected, every knob of the search on the page · Every generation kept — scrub to any one's best, list the last, breed again from any design · A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from

The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the siteA press resets the LOCATION (latitude, longitude) and fetches a YEAR OF WEATHER at that anchor — 2023 from ERA5, a weather model fitted to observations on a ~15-mile (25 km) grid, not a station's measurements: the wind rose, the two season days, the day–night swing, the beam sun. The sliders walk the coordinate up to a mile each way from the anchor; the landform and the sun's latitude are re-read where you put it, the weather is not (a mile is well inside one ERA5 cell). V1, V2, V4, V5, V6 and V7 also fetch the LANDFORM; V3 and V4's classic Council are flat-bench and say so.The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V1The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V2The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V3The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V4The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V5The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V6The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V7The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V9The five studio grounds, one press each — and Relief's two shift sliders across the site: in V10

The air DRAWN in the model — the wind round the building and the air through the room, as moving lines and a speed planeThe Air layer (View layers → Air), off until switched on. Three ways to see the air, each saying what it is. Draughts' 3-D potential flow draws the PATH the air takes — where each inlet's air leaves, the breeze across the floor and at the focus — fed either by the Air sheet's BS 5925 flows or by EnergyPlus's one-zone airflow-network method (Flows); it has no jets and no wakes. And, on request, a coarse lattice Boltzmann CFD (Solver → CFD, Run CFD) finds its own flows, the jets and eddies, and the age of the room's air — wind only (no warm air rising), on flat ground. The readout sets the totals side by side. The CENTURY layer — the skin and the ground weathered year by year, with the ledger of what fails whenA year scrubber (0–120) paints every face by the worst LIMIT STATE it has reached (aesthetic · function · safety, after ISO 15686) or by its condition (a ranking aid), driving rain, wet time, freeze–thaw, mould, sun, UV ageing (the ultraviolet weighted by how hot the face runs), the daily swing of its surface temperature, its soiling (dirt laid by the air, washed by the water that runs down it, dark wherever the rain is kept off) and its runoff, corrosion and carbonation, decay, growth or patina, and the ground by soil lost and settled; the ledger lists the year each threshold crosses — the paint failing on the south wall, the zinc gone off the roof, carbonation at the bar, a joint's sealant split, thin marble bowed ½ in, vinyl warped past its softening point, the frost line under the plinth. Salted paving (sidewalks or a road) brings de-icing salt to the foot of the walls: chlorides into the concrete by Life-365's model, salt crystallisation in brick and stone, worse frost, marine-rate rust. With the Spread on, every year carries its range over 30 synthetic centuries (wetter and drier years, harder winters, material constants drawn inside their published ranges — P10 to P90). A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you setOne walker (SPSA's gradient estimate with a momentum step) over every slider with a range bar the on/off switches, plus the turn, scored on the grounded engine the readout reads. The change-per-step dial moves the hardest-pulled variable that share of its range each step, every other in proportion; the steps-per-second dial sets how often it steps (0.2–8 a second). The force weights hold each station, then crossfade to the next; a force slider takes them over until Cycle forces is pressed again. A bench slider moved by hand is pinned, and the walk carries on from it.A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V1A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V2A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V3A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: only in V4A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V5A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V6A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V7A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V9A live solver on the full bench — every variable walked as the forces cycle, at a speed you set: not in V10

Population, tournament size, elite, crossover kind and chance, α / η, mutation chance and size, immigrants, first-generation spread and the seed are all dials; the speed is designs scored per second (or flat out), with stop-after-a-generation and step one design or one generation. The bench follows the best of each generation, the best so far, or every design as it is scored, slid from one to the next; the search runs in its own worker apart from the drawing. Every generation kept — scrub to any one's best, list the last, breed again from any designEach finished generation keeps its best design and its best, mean and worst score and its spread, drawn as a chart; the bench can show any generation's best while the run carries on behind it. Breed from starts a new generation 0 round a design — from the list, a past generation or the gallery — and the chart marks the branch. Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact sizeSaved views are shared across these four, so a view set on V1's bench applies on V6. HOLD stops the auto-fit re-aiming the camera when the model changes, which is what made two options two different pictures. The viewport is orthographic, so the zoom IS a scale: it can be set to 1/8″ = 1′-0″ and the export is scale-true — a bigger image shows more ground, not a bigger building. V3 has no 3-D viewport; V5 and V4's classic Council draw their own scenes and don't carry this yet.Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V1Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V2Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: not in V3Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V4Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: not in V5Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V6Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V7Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V9Save a camera VIEW — the same angle and scale for every option — and export the picture at an exact size: in V10

A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from★ Pick keeps the design on the bench (or any design of the last generation) with its variables, score and generation, and a drawing of it from the south-east made by Swarm's hidden-line renderer from the design's own solids. Kept in this browser; a pick bred on another starter is listed but usable only on its own program.A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V1A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V2A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V3A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V4A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V5A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V6A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V7A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: not in V9A GALLERY of picked designs — each a small hidden-line picture, to show again or breed from: only in V10

● present · ◆ only in that version · · not there. Every version reads the same engine and the same readout keys, with one difference to know: V2, V5, V6, V7, V9 and V10 ray-test the sun-on-opening keys against the massing and the loaded ground, while V1 without a weather file, V3 and V4 read them unshaded, so the same design reads more sun there. In every version the numbers are calculated on a simple model: trust the comparison between two of your schemes more than any single number.
